What Is the J-1 Teacher Program?
The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is a U.S. Department of State initiative that brings certified teachers from around the world to teach in accredited U.S. schools for up to five years. These educators hold valid teaching licenses, meet strict professional qualifications, and pass extensive background checks and English proficiency assessments before arriving.
Each J-1 teacher participates in cultural exchange activities — from community volunteering to sharing international traditions — that build bridges of understanding between students, educators, and communities.

How It Works
- District Job Offer – The district identifies open teaching positions.
- Candidate Matching – ESS provides pre-screened J-1 candidates who meet subject, grade-level, and certification needs.

- Arrival & Orientation – Teachers participate in cross-cultural and professional training, then integrate into their host schools with ESS support.
